Stepping up to Responsibility
Bureau Veritas - www.bvqi.com
In a few weeks from now people throughout the world will be celebrating
the start of a new year. This is the time of holidays for many and
anticipation of a new year full of hope.
In BVQI this is truly a season of hope. Having being accredited in July
2005 as a Designated Operational Entity (DOE) by the UN for their Clean
Development Mechanism (CDM), BVQI is now in a position to practice their
most revered philosophy of "for the benefit of business and people" not
just for their clients, but also for the world community at large.
Ever since charting out the process of climate change in 1988, the UN
have faced insurmountable obstacles; but as the COP 11 meets in
Montreal on 28th November 2005, the practical results of their years of
hard and meticulous work is there for the world to see. UNFCCC's
achievements are a tribute to the visionary diplomats who have made
Climate Change a reality for the entire world.
With the first commitment
period starting in a few years, it is
plain for all to see that the
mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol
are in place to achieve their
objectives. The skeptics are quiet
as we watch one of the greatest
multi-national movements in recent
times proceeding with sure and
decisive steps towards their goals.
UNFCCC have gathered
tremendous experience over the
years and with their systems in
place, the pace of Climate Change
can only gather greater and
greater momentum.
As an accredited DOE, BVQI is
an extended arm of the UNFCCC
and it is now time for BVQI to step
up and play a responsible and
significant role in the climate
change process.
With their newfound mandate
as a DOE, BVQI can now validate
and verify the reduction in the
levels of Greenhouse gases in
organizations that have
implemented clean technology.
While the prime role in reducing
greenhouse gases is the project
implementers', organizations such
as BVQI have the ultimate responsibility to validate and verify that these projects have actually
reduced the levels of anthropogenic emissions.
This is indeed an awesome responsibility and one that BVQI does not
take lightly. BVQI have therefore set up an organisation with some of their
finest and most talented personnel to execute CDM Projects. These
personnel have been trained and exposed to all the concepts of UNFCCC,
so that they would not only do a competent job technically, but work with
zeal and a sense of missionary dedication, that goes beyond the role of a
mere technician.
With most CDM Projects being implemented in non-Annexe-I
countries, BVQI have built their CDM capabilities to cover countries mainly
in Asia and Latin America. Our CDM Projects are focused in countries
such as Brazil, Russia, India, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka,
Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand. With BVQI's philosophy of being
close to the customer, validators have been stationed in most of the
important locations in these countries. Currently BVQI have more than 60
validators to carry out the validation of Greenhouse Gas emissions.
Presently BVQI are in various stages of validating about 30 CDM
Projects. These projects cover a wide range of industries from Windfarms,
to Hydroelectric Projects and to projects in Chemical and
Manufacturing industries.
| BVQI, the independent certification body of Bureau Veritas, is the
worldwide leader in system certification services. BVQI Operates in more
than 100 countries and serves over 70,000 clients worldwide, certifying
operations to standards such as ISO 9000, ISO 14000, OHSAS, etc.
With our worldwide presence we are committed to playing a major
role in the validation and verification of the JI, CDM and EU ERU
schemes. We see ourselves as one of the major contributors in Validating
and Verifying Greenhouse gases in the years to come. |
