South Korea selected to host Green Climate Fund
By John Parnell
Songdo, Incheon City in the Republic of Korea has been selected as the host of the Green Climate Fund (GCF).
The six cities in contention were Bonn (Germany), Mexico City (Mexico), Songdo (South Korea), Windhoek (Namibia), Warsaw (Poland), and Geneva (Switzerland) but Songdo was selected by consensus.
Attendees of the GCF’s latest meeting, also in South Korea, had identified a determination in the local delegation to host the fund, with the country’s President making a trip to the meeting to lobby on behalf of the bid.
It is understood that the US was in favour of the South Korean bid and was keen to see a physical distance between the UN climate change agency (UNFCCC) in Bonn, and the GCF’s base.
The decision will now be presented at the UNFCCC meeting in Doha this November for endorsement. It is unlikely that that step will change the decision of the GCF board.
